McCloud River Watershed
Winnemem Waywaket
The Nur Pon Winnemem Ke-wal Ye-mer translates roughly to english as Restoring Winter-run Chinook Salmon to the McCloud River above Shasta Dam. The Winnemem Wintu Tribe are the project proponents and their ultimate goal is to establish a swimmable pathway from the Sacramento River to the Winnemem Waywaket (McCloud River) above Shasta Dam. The project supports the population of Nur (Winter-run Chinook, Oncorhynchu tshawyscha) established along the McCloud River by the Tribe and their co-managers, CDFW and NOAA. The swimway path follows Cow Creek, north to Dry Creek, through the Tuiimyali Village and Kerekmet, the Tribe’s most recent land acquisition. The swimway path goes up and over the Shasta Reservoir, following the ridge along Bollibokka Mountain, finally reaching the Winnemem Waywaket, the center of the universe for the Winnemem Wintu Tribe.
